Since their 3rd album \"The Places We Will Go\" in 2008, which was their first release on the prestigious US indie label K, LAKE, the Washington State-based band that has masterfully refined and elevated their sweet, mellow, and timeless pop sound with each album, armed with the songwriting skills of Eli Moore and Ashley Erickson, a husband-and-wife team that boasts an astonishingly high success rate, and the superb arrangements by their members, who are a combination of excellent mixed chorus and multi-instrumentalists, skillfully digesting diverse musical elements. Three years have passed since the masterpiece \"Forever or Never,\" which marked a pinnacle of the traditional LAKE sound. With third songwriter Markley Morrison on indefinite leave, the 9th album was recorded at The Unknown, Phil Elverum's (Mount Eerie) studio in Anacortes, Washington, as with their recent works. The trio consists of Eli, Ashley, and Andrew Dorsett, who boasts unparalleled talent as an arranger and player (Eli says it's the tightest lineup in the group's history). As the title and opening track \"Roundray\" (1) a song with repeating short phrases 2) a round dance) symbolize, the album is based on lyrics and performances with a refined sense of looping without sacrificing the quality of the melodies, resulting in a dreamy, reborn LAKE sound infused with melting grooves and a psychedelic atmosphere. The arrangements are exquisite, not overpowering the soundscape, and brilliantly balance a sense of unity throughout the album with the richness of individual tracks, including M2 which is reminiscent of Stereolab. The album was released overseas only on vinyl and digital, while the CD format was released only in Japan. Furthermore, two previously unreleased tracks (both masterpieces!) are included as bonus tracks on the Japanese edition.
