Following their successful second tour of Japan two years ago, the Montreal-based group TOPS, known for their retro yet stylish pop sound, have completed their fourth album, \"I Feel Alive,\" their first since 2017's \"Sugar At The Gate\"! While retaining their trademark 80s sophisti-pop and modern experimental soft rock groove, the album features a bolder and more expansive sound, resulting in their most pop-oriented work to date. It opens with \"Direct Sunlight,\" featuring dazzling synth and flute accents, and continues with the title track and first single, \"I Feel Alive,\" which they also performed at their 2018 Japan tour. David's fluid and dynamic guitar playing, along with the floating keyboards, Jane's soaring vocals, and the chorus, create a vibrant, slightly melancholic yet refreshing pop tune. In contrast, \"Colder and Closer\" features programmed synths, metallic drumming, and reverberating vocals, creating a wavering sound. While the band is currently based in Montreal, the members live in different regions, and the sound reflects how each member's experiences and strengths are utilized, while the band's refined skills honed through touring come together. This is the first album featuring keyboardist Marta, who joined the band after their previous release, and her highly flexible keyboard work, along with the skillful bass playing of Jackson (who left before the release) ? a collaboration band released on Mexican Summer called Drugdealer ? provides a solid accent. Beneath the soaring melodies and crisp production, \"I Feel Alive\" balances the brilliance of new things with the anguish of leaving the old behind. It's an introspective yet danceable work, catchy and addictive, showcasing a sound that is an extension of TOPS' previous work but with a much larger scale and pop sensibility.
