Known for having many prominent European musicians as members, Serious Black began in 2013 when Mario Rohart (bass) of the German melodic death metal band Emergency Gate discussed his new project concept with Roland Grapow (guitar) of Masterplan. Intrigued by this idea, Roland recruited Thomas \"Thommen\" Stash (drums), formerly of Blind Guardian and Savage Circus; Dominic Sebastian (guitar) of Austria's Edenbridge; and Jan Vasik (keyboards), formerly of Germany's Dreamscape. Ultimately, the vocals were taken over by Urban Breed, the singer of Sweden's Bloodbound. Their debut album, \"As Daylight Breaks,\" released in 2015, featured melancholic melodic power metal music. After Roland and Thomas left due to health issues, they released their second album, \"Mirrorworld\" (2016), with a lineup that included Bob Kationis (guitar), the keyboardist for Firewind and the main guitarist in his own band Outloud, and Alex Holzworth (drums), a German and former member of Rhapsody of Fire. With Bob taking the lead in songwriting and the band shifting to a melodic metal style, they released their third album, \"Magic\" (2017), a concept album, with the same members. This album featured more dramatic and dynamic songs than its predecessor, and they were scheduled to tour in October 2017, but Bob left the band just before the tour to focus on his work with Firewind. Jan was also unable to participate due to family reasons, but they brought in German technical guitarist Christian M?nzner as a replacement and proceeded with the tour. In December 2017, they released the acoustic album \"FIRST LIGHT,\" which was made with the members who were in the band when Bob was still in it, but Jan left the band. In 2018, Alex also left the band, so former Freedom Call drummer Ramy Alli, who had toured with Thomas as a guest musician in 2015, joined, and the band, now a four-piece, released \"Sweet 226\" after a three-year hiatus. While many tracks exhibit a stronger power metal sound, the melancholic melodies in the choruses possess an elegance, creating a striking contrast between intensity and beauty. Urban's expressive vocals add various facets to the diverse songs, resulting in an album filled with melodic elements in every aspect, from vocals to guitar. This work, created after overcoming the crisis of a member's departure, is truly worthy of being called the band's masterpiece.
