The 80s and 90s in Scotland saw the rise of a diverse array of bands, from The Pastels and Boy Hairdressers to Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits, The Vaselines, and Eugenia. Amidst this vibrant scene, Joe McCallinden stood out as a pop songwriter and arranger. His 1988 release \"Happy Like Yesterday\" with Groovy Little Numbers on the 53rd \u0026amp; 3rd label remains a popular classic that graces the history of the Scottish pop scene. He later formed Superstar. In 1992, he was invited by Alan McGee to sign with Creation Records and released \"Greatest Hits Vol. 1\". He also co-wrote the hit song \"Serious Drugs\" as a member of the amorphous unit BMX Bandits led by Douglas Stewart, and was in charge of string and horn arrangements for Teenage Fanclub's \"Bandwagonesque\" and \"Thirteen,\" establishing himself as one of the scene's leading composers, arrangers, and multi-artists. In 2012, he released the album \"Bleached Highlights\" under his own name. In 2015, he released \"Rest And Be Thankful\" and has continued to work at his own pace ever since. In 2020, he released the classical and heavy instrumental album \"Edit.\" In 2023, he began working on a new album, \"Bleached Highlights.\" \"I thought I needed to simplify what I was doing. I thought I should look at my equipment and see what I needed and what I didn't, so I bought some new audio plugins and started learning how to use them and how to make sounds with keyboards and guitars. And before I knew it, these little sounds started to have meaning in my creative process again. I suddenly felt like I was creating again, but in a different way,\" says Joe. In fact, for this album, he played all the instruments himself for the first time and took his time to complete it. The album features a number of somewhat melancholic songs, including a re-recording of \"Sparkle\" from Superstar's album \"Palm Tree\" (1998), but Joe's signature beautiful melodies, delicate and meticulous arrangements, and gentle, soft vocals are still very much present. With Teenage Fanclub's new album also on the horizon in the second half of 2023, be sure to check out the return of Joe McCallinden, who has been a pillar of the Scottish pop scene for himself.
