This latest work sees them teaming up again with the Dutch Metropole Orkest, led by Jules Buckley, with whom they collaborated on their major debut album \"Sylva,\" released in 2015 (on Impulse). All songs were composed by Michael League. In November 2024, he traveled to Japan alone solely to compose this work. From November 24th for two weeks, he stayed at a retreat house in Hijimachi, Oita Prefecture, creating songs and demos using only a MIDI controller, Logic, and guitar. After completing the details, he recorded this album as a studio live performance at \"Kabul a Go-Go\" in Utrecht from January 16th to 18th, 2025. The Metropole Orchestra is a top-class jazz orchestra that has collaborated with many musicians of various genres, including Elvis Costello, Vince Mendoza, Robert Glasper, Cory Wong, and Ledisi. Miho Hazama also became their permanent guest conductor in 2020. They continue to explore the possibilities of the large ensemble format, and their string section, in particular, is renowned for its masterful work in conjunction with the rhythm section. The album title and concept mean \"dream\" in Catalan, and while \"Sylva\" was an \"outward perspective\" that cinematically depicted the natural world, this time they turn their attention to the inner realm of dreams, resulting in an extremely imaginative sound. The track order expresses various aspects from falling asleep to waking up in almost chronological order, with songs depicting the transition from wakefulness to sleep, the feeling of the outside world disappearing as one becomes immersed in sleep, the confusion of waking from a vivid dream, the afterimages of dreams, etc., all transformed and arranged musically. The introspective musical ideas that evoke each image, and the exquisite way the themes change, make it clear that an orchestra was essential to realize this sound. Currently featuring four drummers, including female drummer Nicky Glaspie (who will also be performing in Japan in June), Snarky Puppy has a total of 20 members, and the project is positioned as an ambitious collaboration with the Metropole Orchestra, which comprises over 50 members. The Japanese edition includes bonus tracks featuring narration by Michael League, who talks to Japanese fans about the album and its connection to Japan, and plays keyboards while discussing the creation process of \"Waves Upon Waves\" (translations included in the CD booklet).
