In the UK jazz scene of recent years, where jazz/R&B/club jazz/hip hop/Caribbean & African music and others are swirling around and hybridization has become the norm, the straight jazz scene by TWs alumni is also showing active movements, and he can be said to be literally the most noteworthy artist in that scene. Sultan Stevenson is a 24-year-old born in Hackney, with a father who worked on a jazz radio program at a radio station in Barbados and a mother from Saint Vincent. Influenced by McCoy Tyner and Kenny Kirkland, and in terms of composition by Geri Allen, he studied under Julian Joseph and Simon Purcell. In his late teens, he attended JJJA (Julian Joseph Jazz Academy), and after working for Tomorrow's Warriors, a music education NPO that has produced many artists including Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, and the Ezra Collective, he graduated in 2023 from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, one of London's top music and drama schools. He began performing with his current trio around 2020, and in 2022 recorded his debut album "Fauthful One," featuring Dennis Baptiste (ts), who continues to lead the London jazz circuit and has won numerous awards including the Mercury Prize. The album was released the following year and quickly became a sensation, winning the "Best Newcomer" award at The Parliamentary Jazz Media Awards, and he is considered one of the most promising stars of his generation. His performances at "Jazz Re:freshed," "The Jazz Cafe," and "EFG London Jazz Festival," among others, have already garnered significant acclaim, and in 2024, he was selected for two showcase slots at "Jazz Re:freshed 'outernational'," a jazz event held at SXSW in Texas. This latest work is released by UK's Edition Records. It is a sequel to his debut album, and based on his respect for gospel music, it expresses a captivating sound structure full of contrasts between dynamism and gentle introspection directly connected to his personality. The impressive motifs and carefully selected voicings are modern and already at a level of perfection, and the titles of each song are gospel-like, and the intense breath that can be felt from the dry, spiritual jazz performance is wonderful. The recording members are his regular trio, Josh Short, who also appeared on his debut album, and Soweto Kinch, who has also worked on Utada Hikaru's "BAD Mode" and Nubiyan Twist's "Freedom Fables," is participating this time.
