Mastered by Chris Allen. This all-female vocal jazz ensemble was formed in 2019 and has already performed at various live shows and festivals. Their song \"Desert Song\" won \"Best Arrangement, Instrument, and Vocals\" at the 63rd Grammy Awards, and they were also nominated for \"Best Vocal Jazz Group\" at the 2021 Jazz Journalists Association Awards. The members are Amanda Taylor, a singer and arranger specializing in vocal ensembles; Johnaye Kendrick, a singer-songwriter from New Orleans who is a Thelonious Monk Institute graduate and a certified sound therapy practitioner; and Erin Bentrage, who has collaborated with Moonchild and Jacob Collier, gained significant attention for her cover of Laura Nyro on Christian Youman's debut album, and is also a professor at California State University, Northridge. The group's name is an acronym of Sara, Amanda, Johnaye, and Erin. In 2018, Sara Gazarek first discussed the idea with Amanda Taylor, and from there, their mutual friend Erin Bentrage joined, followed by Johnaye Kendrick at Sara's suggestion. Conscious of the sense of freedom and power that comes from being an all-female group, their Grammy-nominated song \"Desert Song\" is a number that symbolizes the group's concept, with lyrics that \"the ocean is a place of power and peace, but the desert is a place of feminine vitality.\" \"Never You Mind,\" which begins with the name \"Michael Brown,\" is also a song that resonates with the BLM movement. Their overwhelming skill, evident in the delicate weaving of each of the four members' articulations, vibrato, and other vocal textures into the arrangements, and their clear stance linked to modernity, have made them a female vocal ensemble group attracting considerable attention across the United States. The performing members include Seattle-based female pianist and Estesis Quartet member Dawn Clement (p), Ben Williams (b), Christian Youman (ds), and Keita Ogawa (perc, M6). This album features a stellar lineup of featured artists: Jacob Collier (piano, vocals), Michael Mayo (vocals), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet), Terri Lyne Carrington (drums), and Daniel Rotem (tenor saxophone). Original tracks such as \"Deset Song\" and \"Wisteria,\" the winner of the 2020 John Lennon Songwriting Contest, are highlights of the album, along with their arrangements. Other highlights include M4, a song sung by everyone from Frank Sinatra to Jamie Cullum; M7, a cover of a Stevie Wonder song from Michael Jackson's \"Off the Wall,\" which has been covered by Gretchen Parlato and others; M8, a song by Joshua Redman of The Bad Plus; and M9, the debut single by neo-jazz artist Yeba. Furthermore, M10, from UK soul artist Michael Kiwanuka's third album, is a medley with Sarah Gazarek's classic \"Blackbird,\" showcasing the album's diverse range of styles. The Japanese edition includes a bonus track: a live version of \"Desert Song.\" Produced by: Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage Instrumental recording: Pete Minh Vocal engineer\/production\/editing: Amanda Taylor, Erin Bentlage Mixing\/mastering: Rich Breen Dawn Clement (piano and keyboards) Ben Williams (electric and acoustic bass) Christian Euman (drums) Erin Bentlage (ukulele, tracks 1 and 6) Keita Ogawa (percussion, track 6) *Featuring: Michael Mayo (Vocal) Ambrose Akinmusire (Trumpet) Jacob Collier (Piano, Vocals) Terri Lyne Carrington (Drums) Daniel Rotem (Trumpet) The Japanese edition includes a bonus track: a live version of \"Desert Song\".
