The Sun Will Rise Again [Gretchen Parlato] Gretchen Parlato's latest work, following her further musical and artistic evolution with her previous album 'Flor', This is a collaborative album with Lionel Loueke, a guitarist from Benin, West Africa, who played a crucial role in the sound of his debut album \"Gretchen Parlato,\" released the year after he won the Thelonious Monk Competition in 2004. Lionel Loueke has performed with Herbie Hancock, Esperanza Spalding, Miho Hazama, and others, and in 2012 he was produced by Robert Glasper for \"Heritage,\" and he was also a member of Glasper's Blue Note All-Stars (2017), and he has showcased his unique presence to the world through his work on the Herbie Hancock compilation \"HH\" (2020) and Giles Peterson's \"HH Reimagined,\" which will be released in the fall of 2022. Gretchen and Lionel have been close friends for over 20 years, since their time at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, and this long-awaited, full-fledged collaboration is finally here. Gretchen's profound vocals and exceptional sense of rhythm, combined with Lionel's various percussive guitar techniques and vocals that utilize the click sound characteristic of Southern Africa, create an organic ensemble that is filled with the highest level of musical skill in contemporary jazz. The recording took place in LA from February to April 2022. Both musicians also play percussion, and Mark Guiliana (drums, pescus) and Bernice Travis (bass) also participate. Their son, Murray Guiliana, also participates with vocals on three tracks, effectively incorporating the child's voice, which has a strong affinity with African music, into the ensemble. The album includes a cover of Climax (M2), a female R\u0026amp;B group that had a string of hits in the 80s and 90s; the famous song \"Samba Da Pergunta\" (M5), originally sung by Elis Regina on her 1969 masterpiece \"Como y Porque\"; \"Nonbi??n\" (M8), which Gretchen also covered on her first album; and a cover of a song from the Foo Fighters' 1997 album \"The Colour and the Shape\" (M12). In their original songs, including collaborations with Mark Guiliana and others, they express a sublime world where flowing African grooves, Brazilian music, jazz, and more are fused together.
