Centered around Jeff Becerra's original death metal vocals, they create an unsettling and ferocious sound. A new chapter begins for Possessed, who are captivated by madness. Possessed are the fathers of death metal. Few would disagree with this opinion. The fact that Possess is releasing a new album after 33 years is the biggest event in the extreme metal world of 2019! Their two albums from the 80s, \"Seven Churches\" (1985) and \"Beyond the Gates\" (1986), are the direct roots of the death metal genre. Furthermore, the title of their debut demo, released in 1984, was simply \"Death Metal.\" In other words, Possessed are not only the fathers of death metal, but also the ones who named it. However, despite their influence, their career was short-lived. Leaving behind only the two aforementioned albums and the EP \"The Eyes of Horror,\" Possessed ended their activities in 1987, after only four years. (Some say they officially disbanded in 1989.) While many extreme metal bands disbanded but quickly returned to the forefront, Possessed remained a legend. The situation took a dramatic turn in 2007. It was announced that Possessed would be appearing at Wacken Open Air, Europe's largest outdoor festival. The only original member remaining was vocalist Jeff Becerra. Jeff had suffered a tragedy in 1989 when he was shot during a robbery and became paralyzed from the waist down, so he performed from a wheelchair. Needless to say, death metal fans all over the world were ecstatic at Possessed's return after 20 years. (Strictly speaking, the band reformed again from 1990 to 1993, centered around guitarist Mike Treio. Jeff Becerra did not participate at this time.) After that, the newly reformed Possessed, centered around Jeff Becerra, continued to perform at festivals and tour. In 2014, they even came to Japan. Naturally, expectations for a new album were high, and rumors of new songs being written continued to circulate, but no concrete information emerged for quite some time. But finally, the time has come. Their third album, \"Revelations of Oblivion,\" is finally being released after a 33-year hiatus! Now, with the return of a legendary band, it's only natural that there's a mix of anticipation and anxiety. Possessed's three main pillars were Jeff Becerra's original death metal vocals, Larry Lalonde's unconventional guitar riffs (who would later join Primus), and Mike Suss's \"uniquely distinctive\" drumming. However, neither Lalonde nor Suss are in the current Possessed. Naturally, this would raise some concerns. However, there's nothing to worry about. Just listen to \"Revelations of Oblivion.\" What else could this be but Possessed? Becerra's vocals show no signs of decline, and even seem to have evolved. The guitarists have clearly studied Lalonde's riffs well. Only the drums, both in performance and sound quality, are very 21st-century, but this only adds power to the band and doesn't feel out of place at all. (Though there probably isn't a drummer who can replicate Mike Suth's drumming.) The result easily exceeds the inflated expectations of longtime fans! Possessed has proven that they are the pioneers of death metal and are still at the top. Let me say it again. Possessed is releasing a new album after 33 years. And it's an album that is nothing but Possessed. What else could this be but the biggest event in the extreme metal world of 2019?
