Foreigner's history began in 1976 when British guitarist Mick Jones (g), formerly of Spooky Tooth, left Leslie West's band and started forming a new band in New York. Afterwards, they enlisted fellow Brits Ian McDonald (guitar, keyboards), formerly of King Crimson, and Dennis Elliott (drums) from Ian Hunter's band, along with Americans Lou Gramm (vocals), Al Greenwood (keyboards), and Ed Gagliardi (bass), formerly of Black Sheep, to create demos, which led to a contract with Atlantic Records. Composed of British and American members, the band debuted under the name Foreigner with the album \"Let It Go\" (1977). Formed by well-known members, Foreigner became a sensation as a supergroup, and their debut album became a hit, reaching number 4 on the US charts. Their second album, \"Double Vision\" (1978), also reached number 3 on the US charts. Their third album, \"Head Games\" (1979), which featured former Small Faces bassist Rick Wills replacing Ed, reached number 5 on the US charts. Ian and Al then left the band, and the remaining four released their fourth album, \"4\" (1981). Thanks to hit singles like \"Girl Like You,\" \"Urgent,\" and \"Jukebox Hero,\" the album achieved the remarkable feat of spending 10 consecutive weeks at number 1 on the US charts. They continued to have hits with their fifth album, \"Provocateur\" (1984), and sixth album, \"Inside Information\" (1987), but Lou left the band in 1990. Their seventh album, \"Unusual Heat\" (1991), featuring Johnny Edwards (vocals), was a commercial failure, leading to Dennis and Rick's departure. Mick brought Lou back, and with new members, they released \"Mr. Moonlight\" (1994), but in 1997 Lou was diagnosed with a brain tumor, and the band's activities were scaled back. In 2003 Lou left again, so Mick recruited former Hurricane member Kelly Hansen (vocals) and former Dokken member Jeff Pilson (bass), among others, and released their ninth album, \"Can't Slow Down\" (2009), their first in 15 years. In 2014, they released \"The Best of 4 \u0026amp; More,\" which captured a live performance of their complete rendition of \"4.\" Furthermore, in 2016, to commemorate their 40th anniversary, Foreigner released a best-of album containing 40 songs, \"40,\" drawing renewed attention to the band. In May 2017, they performed a live show in Switzerland with an orchestra. This performance is captured in \"Foreigner with 21st Century Symphony Orchestra \u0026amp; Chorus - Live in Switzerland 2017.\" Held at the Lucerne Culture Congress Center in Switzerland, under the direction of renowned Dutch conductor Ernst van Thiel, the concert featured the 21st Century Symphony Orchestra and chorus, primarily in the style of adding an orchestra to their usual electric live performances, but also included acoustic sets. Tracks like \"Cold as Ice,\" \"Girl Like You,\" \"Jukebox Hero,\" \"Feels Like the First Time,\" and even an acoustic version of \"Say You Will\" shine even brighter against the majestic orchestral sound, making this a fitting album to celebrate their 40th anniversary.
