Matt extended a helping hand to Ralf, who had failed an audition for Judas Priest and was considering retirement, thinking it would be a waste to let his talent go to waste. The two quickly invited Tom Naumann (guitar) of Sinner to join them, and began writing songs. They also recruited Klaus Sperling (drums), a friend of Ralf's, as drummer and released the album \"Primal Fear\" (1997). Initially, they intended to end the project after releasing only this one album, but its robust melodic power metal was well-received in Europe and Japan, so the band welcomed a second guitarist, Stefan Leibing (guitar), and went on tour. With their activities now in full swing, they continued to energetically produce albums and perform live, with the members other than Ralf and Matt changing several times. With their seventh album, \"New Religion\" (2007), released in their tenth year since their debut, they began to strongly emphasize dramatic and melodic elements, and continued to release powerful works such as \"16.6 (Before the Devil Knows You Are Dead)\" (2009) and \"Delivering the Black\" (2014). Then, in 2016, with members Ralph, Matt, Tom, Alex Beirod (guitar), Magnus Karlsson (guitar), and Francesco Giovino (drums), they completed their eleventh album, \"Rulebreaker\" (2016). After the album's release, the band, with all members except Magnus, began touring in Europe in February 2016, followed by a North American tour in April-May, and a performance in Japan in June. After that, they toured Australia and Europe, then South America in September, and further in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland in October and November. The German performance from that tour has now been released on CD. This tour featured a setlist centered around songs from their early to mid-career, in addition to tracks from \"Rulebreaker,\" and the band's energy explodes from beginning to end.
