After releasing a demo called \"Time to Go\" in 1999 and an EP called \"Release the Fury\" in 2001, they made their album debut in 2003 with their self-titled album, \"DAGOBA.\" Compared to neighboring Germany, France isn't exactly known for its thriving metal scene. Despite these handicaps, their groovy, heavy, and catchy sound, influenced primarily by North American metal bands such as Pantera, Machinehead, Fear Factory, and Strapping Young Lads, garnered significant attention in Europe. After releasing their second album, \"What Hell Is About,\" in 2006, and their third, \"Face the Colossus,\" in 2008, on the prestigious French label Season of Mist, they moved to XIII Bis Records. In 2010, they released their fourth album, \"Poseidon,\" and then moved to Verycords, releasing their fifth album, \"Post Mortem Nihil Est\" (2013), and their sixth, \"Tales of the Black Dawn\" (2015). In 2014, they also performed at Hellfest, a massive festival in their native France. Footage of that performance was released as a CD with a DVD titled \"Hellfest MMXIV.\" And now, having made a huge leap forward by signing with Jive\/Epic in France and Century Media Records elsewhere, they are releasing their seventh album, \"Black Nova.\" At the beginning, I wrote that Dagobah is a groove\/industrial metal band. Heavy riffs, digital sequences, and clean vocals in the choruses. Certainly, Dagobah's music follows some of the distinctive styles of this genre. However, it is also true that the single phrase \"groove\/industrial metal\" does not fully describe the entirety of \"Black Nova.\" The most distinctive feature that falls outside the groove\/industrial description is the use of symphonic, epic synthesizers. This is influenced by classical music and film music artists such as Wagner, Beethoven, Hans Zimmer, and Jerry Goldsmith. The epic parts reminiscent of film soundtracks and the heavy riffs contrast beautifully, and each element shines brightly. This contrast is the key to \"Black Nova.\" Intensity and catchiness. Melancholy clean vocals and powerful growls, said to be influenced by Queen's Freddie Mercury. Thrash metal songs suddenly appear amidst groovy tracks. It is because of the various contrasting elements that \"Black Nova\" is an album that can be listened to straight through without getting boring. The very striking and surreal artwork on the cover is by Seto Shiro Anton of the Greek symphonic death metal band Septicflesh. A person with a zippered face is submerged in water and spitting out black balls, and these \"black balls\" are said to symbolize the member changes that befell the band last year. In 2016, the drummer and guitarist both left Dagobah. The drummer in particular had been a member with the band for nearly 20 years since 1998, sharing both good and bad times. His departure must have been a huge shock to the band. The artwork depicts a black sphere representing the past, signifying a fresh start with new members. The determination of the reborn Dagobah is embodied in this artistic jacket.
