Formed in 1979 in New York by vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, the band has since featured a diverse range of talented musicians, including Michael Brecker (ts), Steve Gadd (ds), Eddie Gomez (b), Don Grolnick (p), Eliane Elias (p), Peter Erskine (ds), Dennis Chambers (ds), and Mark Johnson (b). Their wide-ranging musical style has made them popular. Their first album, \"Smokin' in the Pit,\" a double live album recorded at the Roppongi Pit Inn in Tokyo, featured Kazumi Watanabe as a guest musician. The innovative acoustic jazz presented there had a significant impact on the jazz scene at the time. They also recorded their only studio album as the original Steps, \"Step by Step,\" in Japan.
