In his youth, he was a devout churchman, beginning to preach at age 15 and working as a Baptist and Methodist pastor around the age of 20. However, around age 25, he switched to the blues, bringing the powerful vocal range and emotional expression he had cultivated through preaching to the music, establishing his own unique style. In 1930, he made his first recording with Paramount Records through an introduction by Charlie Patton. Although the record didn't sell well due to the Great Depression, he enjoyed popularity in his hometown of Coahoma County, rivaling Willie Brown, and later greatly influenced Robert Johnson and Muddy Waters. He was recorded by Alan Lomax and others in 1941-42, but retired from music in 1943 and lived in retirement in Rochester, New York. In 1964, during the folk\/blues revival, he was \"rediscovered\" by young enthusiasts and resumed his activities. The following year, 1965, saw the release of his masterpiece, \"Father of Folk.\" He released \"Preachin' the Blues\" and performed primarily for young white audiences. He continued to tour and record, and died in Detroit in 1988.
