He became famous for his uniquely high-pitched voice, a result of a congenital disorder. In 1949, he was selected as the vocalist for the Lionel Hampton Orchestra, and his song "Everybody's Somebody's Fool," sung as Little Jimmy Scott, became a hit. In 1955, he made his album debut with "Very Truly Yours" on Savoy Records. After releasing two more albums, he released "Falling in Love Is Wonderful" on Ray Charles' Tangerine Records in 1963, but it was immediately recalled and shelved due to contract issues with Savoy. Combined with a lack of management, he disappeared from the public eye throughout the 1960s. He made a comeback in 1970 with "The Source" on Atlantic Records, but with no promotion during the height of R&B, he completely disappeared from the industry afterward. In the 1980s, he began appearing in clubs little by little. Then, in 1991, he gained sudden attention for his singing in the globally successful drama "Twin Peaks." The following year, 1992, he made a miraculous comeback with "All The Way," featuring a star-studded lineup. Since then, he has consistently released albums and won Grammy Awards and NEA Jazz Masters Awards. He passed away in 2014 at the age of 88.
