At 19, he joined the band of Texas bluesman Sonny Rhodes, where he learned lap steel and the art of band leadership. In 2010, he formed the Selwyn Birchwood Band and independently released \"FL Boy\" in 2011 and \"Road Worn\" in 2013. He won the IBC in 2013, was recognized by judge Bruce Igloa, and signed with Alligator Records. In 2014, he released \"Don't Call No Ambulance\" and won the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist. Since then, he has consistently released albums such as \"Pick Your Poison\" in 2017, \"Living in a Burning House\" in 2021, \"The Exorcist\" in 2023, and \"Old School\" in 2024, winning awards such as the Living Blues Award and the Blues Music Award.
