He moved to Memphis at a young age and performed under the name Memphis Charlie. At the age of 18, he moved to Chicago and performed with legendary musicians such as Little Walter and Robert Nighthawk on Maxwell Street and in clubs. In 1967, he released his debut album, \"Stand Back!\", on Vanguard, featuring Fred Below and others. After that, he moved his base to San Francisco and released many excellent works on various labels such as Arflee in the 70s and 80s. His 1979 album \"The Harmonica According to\" released on Kicking Mule Records and his 1990 album \"Ace of Harps\" released on Alligator attracted attention and won numerous awards, including the WC Handy Award. In recent years, he has been very active, winning a Grammy Award in 2013 for his collaboration with Ben Harper on \"Get Up!\", and also making guest appearances on many albums by artists such as Cyndi Lauper and Elvin Bishop, as well as appearing in the movie \"Blues Brothers 2000\".
