After graduating from high school, he moved to Houston and became close friends with Townes Van Zandt and Jerry Jeff Walker during the folk boom. In 1971, he moved to Nashville and signed with a publishing company, beginning his career as a songwriter in earnest. In 1975, he released his debut album, \"Old No. 1,\" which included \"Desperados Waiting for a Train\" and \"LA Freeway,\" on RCA, receiving critical acclaim. Subsequently, he consistently released albums through Warner, Sugarhill, and Asylum, including \"Guy Clark\" (1978), \"Better Days\" (1983), and \"Old Friends\" (1988). He won a Grammy Award for \"My Favorite Picture of You\" in 2013, but passed away in 2016 after a long battle with illness. His songs have been covered by many artists, including Ricky Scaggs, Johnny Cash, and Willie Nelson.
