He then formed Matthews' Southern Comfort and released \"Matthews' Southern Comfort\" in 1969. In 1970, his cover of Joni Mitchell's \"Woodstock\" reached number one in the UK and became a worldwide hit. In 1971, he released \"If You Saw Thro' My Eyes\" as a solo artist, and in 1972, he formed Plainsong with Andy Roberts and others, releasing \"In Search Of Amelia Earhart.\" Since then, he has released dozens of albums, primarily as a solo artist, while repeatedly disbanding and reforming bands.
