His father was the late Lonnie Brooks, a heavyweight of the Chicago blues scene (father is Lonnie, son is Ronnie), and his younger brother Wayne is also a guitarist, making him part of a blues family. After graduating from high school, he began his career as a musician in earnest with his father's band, and made his first recording in 1988 on his father's live album, \"Live from Chicago.\" He also participated in the Alligator Records 20th Anniversary Tour. He made a late debut in 1998 with \"Golddigger\" on Watchdog Records. The album was nominated for Best New Artist at the Blues Music Awards. Subsequently, he released \"Take Me Witcha\" in 2001 and \"The Torch\" in 2006. His guitar playing, honed through live performances, has been highly acclaimed as a classic Chicago style, and he has appeared at numerous festivals in the US and Europe. He has also made guest appearances on albums by many blues musicians, including Elvin Bishop, Billy Branch, Eddie Clearwater, and Coco Montoya.
