He debuted in 1978 with the album \"Dreams About Life\" on Folkways. He also began acting around the same time. In 1993, he was cast as Robert Johnson in the musical \"Trick the Devil\". After that, he starred in various works, including \"In Bed with the Blues\" in 1994, for which he wrote and composed the music, and won an Emmy Award. In 1995, he returned to the music world after a long hiatus, releasing the live album \"Stomp Down the Rider\" on Red House, followed by the studio album \"Call Down the Thunder\" in 1996. Since then, he has continued to release music consistently, participating in tribute albums for Charlie Patton and Bob Dylan. He has been nominated for the WC Handy Award a total of nine times. More recently, in 2017, he was nominated for a Grammy for \"Sonny \u0026amp; Brownie's Last Train,\" a duo release with harpist Fabrizio Poggi.
