The Clapping Song 12. Soul Drums Sandy Nelson is a surf-rock drummer born in Santa Monica, California in 1938. He was a high school classmate of Jan Berry and Dean Torren (Jan \u0026amp; Dean) and Kim Fowley. In 1959, he released \"Geronimo\" as part of the Renegades with Bruce Johnston (Beach Boys) and Richard Podler. Afterwards, he participated in recordings as a session drummer for bands such as the Teddy Bears and Hollywood Argyles. In 1959, his solo debut single, \"Teen Beat,\" reached number 4 on the Billboard charts and became a million-selling hit, an unusual feat for an instrumental track by a drummer. He then signed with Imperial Records and released numerous singles, including hits like \"Let There Be Drums\" and \"Drums Are My Beat.\" He also consistently released albums, such as \"Plays Teen Beat.\" In 1963, he suffered a serious injury in a motorcycle accident, resulting in the amputation of his right leg, but he continued recording and left behind more than 30 albums by the early 1970s. He retired from the forefront of the music scene in the late 1970s but released \"Nelsonized\" in 2008.
