He started playing saxophone in his teens, and in 1949, at the age of 19, he became a professional musician, participating in albums by J.J. Johnson and Bud Powell. On January 17, 1951, he participated in a recording with Miles Davis, and at the same time recorded \"I Know,\" his first leader album, with Miles playing piano. Following that, he signed with Prestige and released his first album, \"Sonny Rollins Quartet,\" in 1952. He continued to release albums consistently, including \"Moving Out\" in 1954 and \"Worktime\" in 1955. In 1956, he solidified his position with his masterpiece, \"Saxophone Colossus.\" He continued to record extensively for various labels such as Blue Note and Riverside, and performed in concerts and festivals around the world, including Japan. From the 1970s onward, he contributed to electric jazz, film scores, and even rock albums by artists like the Rolling Stones.
