The sound is reminiscent of the old-school swamp soul created by Aretha Franklin and Betty Lovett in Muscle Shoals! About the Artist Bette Smith is from Brooklyn, New York. Influenced by her father, who was a choir leader from the age of five, she grew up surrounded by gospel and soul music, and later began performing live locally. After her brother, who had always encouraged and supported her, passed away from kidney failure, she decided to seriously pursue a career in music. Then, in 2017, under the umbrella of Fat Possum, Big Legal Mess Records, they released their debut album \"Jetlagger,\" produced by Jimbo Mathis, formerly of Squirrel Nut Zippers. The album was critically acclaimed by numerous music magazines including NPR, Billboard, and MOJO, and reached number one on the Roots Music Report chart. They also performed at many festivals, including the Montreux Jazz Festival. After that, they continued to tour energetically, and in May 2020, they digitally released a cover of Maroon 5's \"Memories\" in collaboration with Jesse Johnson, guitarist of The Time, on Cleopatra Records.
