Media Reviews and More: The legendary album "Armitage Road" by The Heshwewe Beshwe Group, originally released in South Africa and France in 1970, has finally been released on CD for the first time! The title and cover art are clearly a parody of The Beatles' 1969 album "Abbey Road," and the image of guitarist and composer Cyril McBan crossing the album in a wheelchair, along with the context of South Africa at the time, deliberately contrasts the two albums. The refreshingly funky and poppy hard bop jazz by these energetic young musicians, all in their twenties, still sounds fresh today. (C)RS

About the Artist: Formed in 1969 in Durban, near Johannesburg, South Africa, the group centered around alto saxophonist Henry Sithhall (who later formed Drive and achieved success, but died in a car accident in 1977), who had previously played with Gibsen Kente and the Jazz Dazzlers. The band members were his brother, tenor saxophonist Stanley Sithall, bassist Ernest Mosul, drummer Nelson Maguwaza, and guitarist Cyril McBan, who was paralyzed from the waist down after contracting polio as a child. At the time, they were a group of energetic young men in their twenties, and their band name means "to go by force" in an African language. Their only album, recorded in 1970, was "Armitage Road." The title and cover art were a play on The Beatles' "Abbey Road," released the previous year. The image of Cyril in his wheelchair crossing the streets of the township (a racially segregated area under apartheid) in Orlando, Johannesburg, where he lived at the time, deliberately contrasts the two albums. The album was released in South Africa and France in 1971.
