Born in 1941 to a father who ran a record shop, he grew up surrounded by various kinds of music. He worked as a guitarist under the name Mac Rebennack from his teens, but switched to piano after injuring his left hand at the age of 20. He moved to Los Angeles in the mid-1960s and began his career as a studio musician. After joining the Wrecking Crew and other groups, he made his solo debut in 1968 with \"Gris-Gris\" on Atco Records. In 1972, he released his masterpiece \"Gumbo,\" followed the following year by his biggest hit, \"Right Place Wrong Time,\" which reached number 9 on the US charts. His 1989 song \"Makin' Whoopee\" won him a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, and he won a total of six Grammy Awards throughout his career. In recognition of his contributions to spreading the New Orleans sound and his immense influence on the music world throughout his more than 60-year career, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.
