He began working as a professional guitarist while still in high school, backing artists like ZZ Hill and Joe Tex. From the mid-70s, he was selected as O.V. Wright's bandleader, a position he held until Wright's death in 1980. He continued to play as a backing musician for big names such as Little Johnny Taylor, Bobby Bland, and Little Milton. After 1985, he began his solo career, releasing his solo debut album \"Here We Go\" on JSP in 1996. Since then, he has consistently released albums every year, and all of his albums since 2005's \"No Boundaries\" (including \"Red Cadillac\" in 2008, \"Ace of Spades\" in 2009, and \"Remembering O.V.\" in 2013) have received high praise and he has won numerous Blues Music Awards. In 2014, he released \"Soul Brother,\" a collaboration with Otis Clay. He is also active as a producer and composer.
