Born in Sacramento, California in 1946, he grew up traveling across the United States with his railroad worker father, experiencing a wide range of music. He began his professional career before the age of 10, collaborating with Vince Guaraldi and participating in Herbie Hancock's album \"Thrust\" (1974). He continued to support Hancock for many years afterward, and as a founding member of The Headhunters, he released albums such as \"Survival Of The Fittest\" (1975). He was also a member of the fusion band Brand X, which included Phil Collins, and has participated in works by other artists such as Bette Davis, Alphonso Johnson, and Eddie Henderson, building his career. In 1992, he released the album \"The Funk Stops Here\" in collaboration with Paul Jackson, and in 1995, he released \"The Headhunter\" under his own name.
