After graduation, he joined Lionel Hampton's band and toured with them, moving to New York in 1953. He worked as a session musician in Manhattan clubs and studios, participating in works by various artists from Sam Cooke and James Brown to George Benson and John Lennon, including The Coasters' hit \"Yakety Yak\" (1958). In 1965, he signed with Atlantic Records and worked as a backing musician and musical director for artists such as Aretha Franklin and Albert King, making a significant contribution to the label's development. He was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 in recognition of his significant influence on later R\u0026amp;B, soul, and rock music. He also released hit albums under his own name, such as \"Soul Twist\" (1962) and \"Memphis Soul Stew\" (1967).
