Janis Joplin joined the band the following year, 1966. They gradually gained popularity locally and debuted in 1967 with their self-titled album. Their appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival brought them sudden attention, and their album charted on Billboard for 30 weeks. Maintaining that momentum, their 1968 second album, \"Cheap Thrill,\" became a massive hit, reaching number one on the Billboard charts. However, after this album, Janis Joplin left the band with Sam Andrew to pursue new possibilities and form the Cosmic Blues Band. The remaining members, along with Sam Andrew (who had left the Cosmic Blues Band), reformed the band with new members including Nick Gravenites, Kathy McDonald, and Mike Finnegan.
