Born in Harlem to a father who plays flute and percussion and a mother who is a singer, she is the nephew of three-time Grammy Award-winning jazz singer Nancy Wilson. She began vocal and piano lessons at the age of nine and opened for Marvin Gaye. In 1997, she contributed songwriting and backing vocals to Ryuichi Sakamoto's album \"Smoochy\" and toured with him. In addition, she has made numerous guest appearances on albums such as Towa Tei's \"Sound Museum\" (1998), Lalah Hathaway's \"Outrun the Sky\" (2004), and Roberta Flack's \"Let It Be Roberta\" (2012), sharing the stage with various big stars including Rihanna, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder.
