His father was Native American and his mother was Caribbean. At the age of 20, he moved to Greenwich Village, where he painted and participated in poetry readings. As soon as he started singing in clubs, he became a sensation in the Village's folk scene and signed with Albert Grossman, Bob Dylan's manager. In 1967, he debuted with the album \"Mixed Bag\" on Verve Folkways. This was followed by \"Something Else Again\" in 1968 and \"Richard P. Havens, 1983\" in 1969. Then, in August 1969, he performed as the opening act on the first day of Woodstock. This became a turning point, and his fame skyrocketed. He founded Stormy Forest and consistently released albums until around 1980, including \"Stonehenge\" in 1970 and \"Alarm Clock\" in 1971. After that, although releases decreased, he toured the world primarily through live performances and participated in various collaborations. In 2008, he released \"Nobody Left to Crown,\" but announced his retirement due to health reasons.
