His uncle is Willie Eason, the \"father of sacred steel.\" His father is Aubrey Gent, the \"master of sacred steel,\" who has released solo albums on Arflee. He picked up the lap steel at a young age and began his serious musical career in West Palm Beach after graduating from high school, playing nightly in cover bands. He moved to Atlanta and worked as a sideman and studio musician, catching the eye of Bruce Hampton, who joined his group for a year. He has performed with the Allman Brothers Band, Derek Truck, Susan Tedeschi, and others, and was a guest on Zac Brown Band's 2013 album \"The Grohl Sessions, Vol. 1\". He also accompanied them on their national tour, serving as the opening act.
