In 1953, he formed Country Gentlemen with Jack Williams. It was a dance band that played rockabilly and country on electric guitar. It was there that he learned the flatpick technique. At the same time, he also played in a traditional folk band with Clarence Tom Ashley and others. Amidst this, field recordings made by folk music researcher Ralph Rinzler and others were released in 1961 as \"Old Time Music at Clarence Ashleys Vol. 1.\" Released by Folkways, the album gained popularity among folk revivalists.
