Music: Elena Kats-Chernin Born in Tashkent, Uzbekistan in 1957. In 1975, the Kats-Chernin family emigrated from the Soviet Union to Australia. After studying composition with Richard Toop in Australia until 1980, she studied with Helmut Lachenmann in Germany. She was active in Europe, creating many works for the stage and ballet. After working in Germany for 13 years, she returned to Australia in 1994. Since returning, she has composed for numerous performers and ensembles, including three chamber operas and two piano concertos. She also composed the music for the \"Deep Sea Dreaming\" section of the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
