Ashkenazy's interpretation lacks the sticky lyricism and exaggerated accelerandos of some other orchestras; his relaxed, natural flow remains unchanged. However, within that, there is a unique expression, and one can sense his meticulous attention to detail. For example, in the middle section of the second movement (from 4 minutes 5 seconds), where the instruction is pi? mosso (faster), Ashkenazy emphasizes the rhythm like a march, and the music quickly reaches a boiling point before abruptly returning to reality. It is truly vivid and impressive. The NHK Symphony Orchestra is, as expected, excellent. The magnificent ensemble in the third movement is a highlight, but the final movement, which explodes powerfully while still carefully rendering every single note, is also very typical of the NHK Symphony Orchestra. Although they are said to be a German orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra's calm tone is well-suited to Russian music. This album makes one look forward to the various Russian works that this combination will likely tackle in the future.
