Following 2019's \"Beware of the Dogs,\" \"Flood\" is a record of Donnelly's rediscovery, the product of months of risky experimentation, self-reflection, and many transformations. Like the Banded Stilt on the album cover, Donnelly is stepping into uncharted territory, learning about herself as an artist and how rich an individual can be. Donnelly went birdwatching in the rainforest of Beringen, Australia, one of the many cities she lived in while making the album. \"I was able to let go of the feeling that someone was reacting to me. I forgot that I was a musician and experienced being just a tiny being that simply exists,\" she says. By reaffirming her insignificance, Donnelly was able to unearth a new creative well she didn't even know she had. She left Beringen and traveled around the country, writing 43 songs. \"I often wrote songs in unfamiliar places. I went to Fremantle, Williams, Gildington, Margaret River, Melbourne, and often I didn't know where I was. With borders closed and contact with family cut off, it's undeniable that I focused on the important parts of my life,\" she recalls. Writing songs in new locations also gave rise to new approaches. Writing songs with band members Jennifer Aslett, George Foster, Jack Gaby, and Marcel Tussie sometimes felt like experimental play in kindergarten. Co-producers Anna Laverty and Jake Webb (Methyl Ethyl) also helped create a relaxed and natural atmosphere in the studio. Stepping away from her usual electric guitar songwriting, Donnelly has turned to piano, infusing the album with an introspective fluidity and vulnerability. \"They create an illusion when viewed in a flock, but become a unique work of art when viewed alone,\" Donnelly says of the Banded Stilt. Each song on 'Flood' is a work of art in itself, but the collection as a whole richly shares everything about Stella Donnelly. Stella Donnelly is a singer-songwriter from Perth, Australia. After studying music at university, she has pursued a solo career while also playing guitar in Bells Rapids and Boat Show. Her 2017 single \"Boys Will Be Boys\" won the Levi's Music Award at Bigsound 2017, Australia's music trade fair. Gaining global attention, they signed with Secretly Canadian.
