Mitski has announced that her new album, 'Laurel Hell', will be released on February 4, 2022, by Dead Oceans. Her previous album, 'Be the Cowboy' (2018's most acclaimed album, winning Album of the Year from Pitchfork, New York Magazine, and others), propelled the cult-favorite Mitski to indie stardom. The physical and mental strain of touring, and the numerous pitfalls that came with increased fame, affected both her mental state and her music. 'Be The Cowboy' was driven by a persona that reflected the strength and resistance of women, but ultimately it was nothing more than the musician \"wearing another mask\". While widespread public recognition may seem appealing on the surface, it hides a deadly trap. \"At some point, I realized that if I continued like this, I would become completely numb,\" she admits. \"What I needed were love songs about real relationships. Songs that would encourage me to forgive both myself and others. I'm always making mistakes. I don't want to be a role model for other people, but I'm not a bad person either. I needed to create a space for myself where I could sit in that gray area,\" she says. Most of the songs on this album were written in 2018 or earlier, and the album wasn't mixed until May 2021. This was the longest production period Mitski had ever spent on an album, and it was completed in the midst of a global upheaval. 'Laurel Hell' was recorded during lockdown with Patrick Hyland, her longtime producer. As a whole, the album has evolved to be \"more upbeat and dance-oriented,\" and Mitski explains that \"I needed to make songs that would encourage people to keep going.\" Laurel Hell is a soundtrack to change. It is a map to a place where fragility and resilience, sorrow and joy, mistakes and transcendence can all coexist within us humans, where they can all be acknowledged and ultimately seen as love. \"I accept it all,\" she vows. \"I forgive it all.\" Mitski is a Japanese-American singer-songwriter and musician. While studying music at university, she independently released two albums, Lush (2012) and Sad, New Career in Business (2013), and her third album, Bury Me at Makeout Creek, released in 2014 by Double Double Whammy (later reissued by Dead Oceans), received critical acclaim. Subsequently, she released her fourth album, \"Puberty 2,\" in 2016, and her fifth album, \"Be the Cowboy,\" in 2018, both through Dead Oceans. \"Be the Cowboy\" received critical acclaim, including being named the number one album of the year by Pitchfork.
