The label's name comes from the Chiaroscuro Concerts that Eddie Condon held in the 1930s, and Chiaroscuro actively records new recordings of veterans from the swing era, including Condon, making it a valuable label that preserves the golden age of American jazz. He is particularly known for producing many works by pianists such as Teddy Wilson, Earl Hines, Dave McKenna, Ralph Sutton, and Mary Williams, and has long been a beloved figure in Japan, a country with many piano jazz fans.
