Four years after her critically acclaimed previous work, her third album, "Water Made Us," co-produced with McLenney, is released. Participating musicians: Saba, Duendita, Peter CottonTale Chicago musician and poet Jamila Woods will release her new album, "Water Made Us," on October 13th via Jagjaguwar, her first new album since her critically acclaimed 2019 album "LEGACY! LEGACY!". This album is co-produced by McLenney and Jamila Woods, and features contributions from Saba, duendita, and Peter CottonTale. The album title is a subtle reference to the famous quote by Toni Morrison, "All water has a perfect memory and is forever trying to get back to where it was." Here, memory, place, and the feeling of returning function as pillars. In 2017's "HEAVN," Woods discovered a way to celebrate her own community within the lineage of organizing the Black feminist movement. In 2019's "LEGACY! LEGACY!", she reframed her own life experiences through the personas of iconic Black and Brown artists, but "Water Made Us" is a completely new way to create a self-revelatory work. The album's story began to take shape when she connected with LA-based producer McClenney, and the two collaborated to create each song from scratch. The resulting "Water Made Us" reveals a new side of Woods that she couldn't share with her previous work, making it her most personal album to date. "Water Made Us feels like the most personal and vulnerable piece I've ever made. I love creating from raw material. I love delving deep into a subject and extrapolating from what I discover. We stayed home for two years, and I became the material. I'm grateful to the therapist, the astrologer, my family and friends who listened to me, and everyone who helped me process the thoughts and questions I wrote in my journal and transform them into this work. Whatever stage your heart is in, I hope this work feels like a playlist that supports you in the life cycle of relationships," Jamila says of the album. Jamila Woods is a Chicago-based R&B singer known for her collaborations with Chance the Rapper on "Sunday Candy" (from the album Surf) and "Blessings" (from the mixtape Coloring Book), and her participation in Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's "White Privilege II." In 2016, she released her debut album HEAVN as a free download. This album, featuring collaborations with Chance the Rapper, Noname, Saba, Lorine Chia, Kweku Collins, Donnie Trumpet, and others, garnered significant attention and was selected as one of the best albums of the year by Pitchfork and many other media outlets. Following this, he signed with Jagjaguwar. In October 2017, 'HEAVN' was also released physically. In May 2019, he released his second album, 'LEGACY! LEGACY!'. Featuring production by oddCouple, Peter Cottontale, Slot-A, and others, and featuring collaborations with Saba, Nico Segal, Nitty Scott, and others, this album also received high praise, being selected as one of the best albums of the year by various media outlets. Woods has played at festivals such as Primavera in Barcelona and Portugal, Day Inn/Day Out, and Format Festival, sharing the stage with many artists including Corinne Bailey Rae, Rafael Saadiq, and Common. Furthermore, the poet, who has also received the Pushcart Prize, has had her work featured in the Library of America anthology, "African American Poetry: 250 Years of Struggle & Song" (2020). In addition, she is the artist-in-residence for the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts for the 2021-2022 academic year. [TRACKLIST] 1. Bugs 2.
