This is his first release on Dead Oceans. 'MAHAL' represents Chaz Bear's boldest and most captivating journey to date. Its sound, encompassing shaggy psychedelic rock of the 60s and 70s with modern post-rock of the 90s, transcends genre and sonic boundaries, creating a listening experience reminiscent of riding in the back of the Filipino jeepney that graces the album's cover. 'MAHAL' is quintessential Toro y Moi, returning to past works while Bear forging a new path in his own unique way. The album was completed last year at Bear's Oakland studio, involving numerous collaborators including Sofie Royer, Ruban Neilson (Unknown Mortal Orchestra), Alan Palomo (Neon Indian), and Mattson 2. \"I wanted to make a record featuring more musicians than any other record,\" Bear explains.  Based in the Bay Area of ??South Carolina, Toro y Moi is Chaz Bear's project spanning over 12 years. Following the global economic collapse of 2008, Toro y Moi emerged on the scene as a leading figure in chillwave (a subgenre of music), and continues to exert a profound influence on other musicians today. Over the following decade, Bear's music and graphic design gained widespread acclaim. He released six albums on Carpark Records, exploring psychedelic rock, deep house, and UK hip-hop while maintaining his R\u0026amp;B and Toro y Moi identity. As a songwriter and producer, he has worked with artists such as Tyler, The Creator, Flume, Travis Scott, HAIM, and Tegan and Sara. As a graphic designer, he has collaborated with brands such as Nike, Dublab, and Van's.
