A complete departure from their previous work, their 12th album, \"Wild Loneliness,\" features a star-studded lineup of guest artists and speaks about what to be grateful for in these tragic times. Guests: Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Raymond McGinley (Teenage Fanclub), Owen Pallett, Andy Stack (Wye Oak), Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Sharon Van Etten, Franklin Bruno, Traceean Campbell (Camera Obscura), and others. Like all the records Superchunk has made over the past 30-plus years, \"Wild Loneliness\" is exceptionally brilliant and infectious. After the anger of \"What a Time to Be Alive,\" the new record speaks more about what to be grateful for in these tragic times than about what has been lost. With this album, the band seems to be focusing once again on the possibility of development. That possibility is built into the songs themselves and lies in the hidden surprises. For example, when Andy Stack of Wye Oak comes in on the title track, it adds a whole new texture to the song. The same is true when Owen Pallett's strings come in on \"This Night.\" And my favorite surprise is the harmony between Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub and Raymond McGinley on \"Endless Summer.\" Due to COVID-19, Mac, Laura, Jim, and Jon recorded separately. However, this method allowed for remote participation from people like Mike Mills (R.E.M.), Sharon Van Etten, Franklin Bruno, and Tracyanne Campbell (Camera Obscura). Some of the songs were written before the pandemic, but others, like \"Wild Loneliness,\" were written in isolation. I think of songs as memory devices. Music is good at crystallizing memories. When I listen to \"Detroit Has a Skyline,\" I remember singing along at a live show in Detroit 20 years ago. Listening to \"Overflows\" takes me back to the time when I would whisper the slow version to my young son as his most desired lullaby. \"Wild Loneliness\" is becoming a part of my life and my memories. It will become a part of yours. And I can picture people 20, 50, 100 years from now listening to this record and marveling at what these artists have created. I can picture them marveling at what these artists have created together in these worrying (and worryingly isolated) times: beauty, possibility, and wonder. But we don't have to wait that long. Let's marvel now. (Maggie Smith) Superchunk is an indie rock band formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina in 1989.
