The album will be released on February 16, 2018, by their own label, Merge. \"Making a record that completely ignores the surrounding environment where we live and where our children are growing up feels strange to anyone in a band, at least to our band right now.\" The urgency of current events following the collapsed 2016 elections gave Superchunk's Mac, Laura, Jim, and Jon the impetus to quickly create new material. 'What a Time to Be Alive' is Superchunk's first new album in four years. \"It's a record about a tragic and depressing situation, but it's not a record that makes you feel tragic and depressed when you listen to it,\" says Mac. In fact, like many of Superchunk's songs from their nearly 30-year career, the tracks on 'What a Time to Be Alive' confront anger and anxiety with the catharsis and upliftment of loud punk heat and exhilarating pop energy. Like 2013's 'I Hate Music,' which focused on death, loss, and the role of music in an aging society, 'What a Time to Be Alive' takes you to the forefront of pain. It's as challenging as it is desperate, like raising your hands in surrender while simultaneously ordering a battle readiness. Many of the album's tracks were written between November 2016 and February 2017. Like \"I Hate Music,\" recording and mixing were handled by Beau Sorenson (Death Cab For Cutie, Bob Mould, etc.).
