Furthermore, in recent years, he has not only visited Japan with his own big band and Knower, but also with Thundercat's band, headlined the White Stage on the second day of Fuji Rock '23, and made a surprise appearance on NHK E-tele's \"Tensai Terebi-kun,\" establishing himself as one of the most talked-about artists, and this album release comes at a time when he is in a position to continue generating buzz. The music played on this album is bigger, bolder, and more expansive than any of his previous works. This is jazz. It is also classical music. It is also funk. You can hear synths and loops. You can hear band performances, and of course, live drums. There are also performances by a full orchestra. Some songs are very concise. Some songs are well over 10 minutes long. For Lewis, jazz has always been a place to be freed from all expectations, and in \"nothing,\" a collaboration with the Metropole Orchestra and Jules Buckley, he embodies this musically. The Metropole Orchestra is a famous Dutch orchestra that fuses a jazz big band with a classical symphony orchestra. The group has been nominated for a Grammy Award 24 times, winning four of them. Founded in 1945, they have collaborated with legends such as Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Elvis Costello, and Ivan Lins. In recent years, under the direction of principal conductor Jules Buckley, their collaborations with Snarky Puppy and Jacob Collier have won Grammy Awards. They have also actively collaborated with a new generation of stars such as Robert Glasper, Gregory Porter, and Corey Wong. They have collaborated with Louis Cole numerous times since 2021, under the direction of Jules Buckley. At live performances, it has become a tradition for everyone to wear skull suits, following Louis's example, and that photo is used on the album cover. The release of this work is surprising because, until almost the very end, 'nothing' was not actually an album. It was a collaboration, a series of concerts, a crossover of two worlds. Lewis had longed for such an opportunity for many years. His father was a big fan of classical music, so he absorbed a lot of it as a child. As soon as he started working on the project with the orchestra, he became \"passionate\" about composing. The finished recording consisted of 17 tracks and more than an hour of music. What Lewis was looking for was very clear: to create music that was deeply moving, yet at the same time simple and straightforward. Almost all of the 17 tracks were new compositions. Lewis himself handled all the composition, arrangement, mixing, and mastering. He was also involved in all of the orchestration, completing the orchestration for eight of the tracks by himself. Working with an outside arranger was never an option. \"That was the only way to be satisfied with the result. This is my pure vision. It cannot be mixed with anyone else's.\" The Metropole Orchestra, conducted by Jules Buckley, was the ideal partner for this project. This ensemble toured Europe with a 50-piece orchestra, Lewis's band, and guest stars such as his longtime creative partner Genevieve Artadi, playing sold-out shows across the continent. With the exception of some re-recorded vocals and overdubs, 'nothing' features excerpts from these ecstatic live performances. The takes included on this album come from 2021 studio sessions, the 2022 North Sea Jazz Festival, and live recordings from Germany and Amsterdam in 2023. According to Lewis, he listened to and reviewed the sound of the more than 60-piece orchestra and band to personally select and mix the best takes from these recordings. For Lewis, the mixing stage was the highlight of the job. He spent a full nine months selecting the best takes and adjusting the balance and frequency of the sound until the orchestral parts truly shone. \"I was sad when the mixing was finished,\" he laughs. \"When I'm mixing my solo tracks, I sometimes feel like the song needs some magic powder. But when I'm mixing the whole orchestra with my rhythm section, a human energy just flows out! There's no need to add magic. The magic is always there.\" The rhythm section and vocals feature his usual collaborators, including Genevieve Altadi, Sam Wilkes, Jacob Mann, Rai Thistleswaite, Pedro Martin, and Fensanta, who have also played with him in Knower. Tracks like \"Life\" and \"High Five,\" featuring them, sound like Knower songs, and Lewis's existing tracks \"Let It Happen,\" \"Shallow Laughter,\" and \"Bitches\" have also been reborn as orchestral versions. \"Who Cares,\" which he had previously performed live, is also included on the album for the first time. Overall, the album expands on Lewis's musical world with the Metropole Orchestra, and can be described as more beautiful and more chaotic than ever before.
