If the songs didn't ask for it, there was no need to show complexity.\" With this album, the band's direction wasn't necessarily linear or planned, but rather completed through deliberation and drifting. For example, they would play with the equipment and each other during jam sessions that lasted late into the night or early morning, and during meals they shared. The album also features other Melbourne-based musicians, including Taylor Crawford, aka Chip, who plays a self-made instrument called a frello, guitarist Tom Martin, and flutist Nicodemus. And the mixing was handled by Mario Caldato Jr., the renowned producer who has worked with Beastie Boys, Bj?rk, Blur, Beck, and Seu Jorge. Hiatus Kaiyote has always described their albums as microcosms or complete ecosystems.
