John Cale, an original member of The Velvet Underground, who has brought about a massive transformation in both sound and culture in music history and remains at the forefront of his time, has released his latest album, \"POPtical Illusion,\" on Domino. Don't be fooled by its playful title. He continues to be fiercely angry at the selfish capitalists and unrepentant swindlers who have deliberately destroyed the wonders of this world and the goodness of humanity. \"POPtical Illusion\" was completed just over a year after his acclaimed 2023 album \"Mercy,\" which featured a star-studded lineup of guest artists including Animal Collective, Sylvain Esso, Laurel Halo, Tay Shi, and Actress, and was praised for its combination of exploration and ferocity. However, this album is neither \"Mercy II\" nor a collection of unreleased tracks. In fact, throughout his career spanning more than 60 years, Cale has never repeated the same thing. His pioneering spirit has shifted between ecstatic classicism and free-spirited rock, and between traditional compositional methods and the majestic unsettling reconstruction of electronic music. And with \"Poptical Illusion,\" he almost single-handedly immerses himself in a labyrinth of synthesizers, samples, organs, and pianos, conveying a swirling message of hope, yet a wise assertion that change is still possible. Produced in a Los Angeles studio by Nita Scott, Cale's longtime creative partner, \"Poptical Illusion\" is the work of a man who never ignores anger and its reasons, but who is looking towards the future. Cale has often said that something changed within him during the pandemic. Approaching 80, he realized that he was living and creating in an era that many of his contemporaries never experienced. He wanted to document it. In just over a year, he wrote more than 80 songs, attempting to survey the diverse human experiences of this period collectively. Humor flows into despair, regret gives way to tolerance, and sadness intertwines with surrealism. Furthermore, Cale never relegated himself to the position of an old man, nor did he complain about the modern age as a bystander or reminisce about the old ways. A classically trained viola player who studied under both John Cage and Aaron Copeland, he has long been an avid fan of hip-hop, particularly drawn to its creativity in using technology to create multidimensional textures and construct astonishing melodies. \"Poptical Illusion\" integrates these emotions and fervor into a dozen electronic playgrounds, with Cale's majestic voice weaving together puns, insights, complaints, aphorisms, life, and certain truths. John Cale continues to push the boundaries of his time throughout his illustrious career. The cutting-edge drones he incorporated into \"Sun Blindness Music\" paved the way for The Velvet Underground. Not to mention his production work with Patti Smith and The Stooges, the frenetic rock of \"Fear\" and \"Slow Dazzle\" created the framework for the half-century of punk, post-punk, and art rock that followed. And his curiosity to show that electronic sounds in rock could be more than just a gimmick has inspired countless important scenes. With \"Poptical Illusion,\" Cale rises again as a musician of this era. He frowns in weariness at the organized chaos of recent history, and then turns his heel towards the future, even if he, like us, doesn't know what he'll find there or who he'll become. He's simply happy to move forward. The domestic CD release includes bonus tracks, liner notes, and lyric translations. \u003ccd tracklist\u003e 01. God Made Me Do It (don?ft ask me again) 02.
